I just want to be there When the morning light explodes, on your face it radiates I can’t escape

I love you ’till the end

Chelsea and Ryan’s shoot at Woolfrey’s Pond was so relaxing and fun. I had a great time hanging out with them – even though I fell down about a thousand times, haha!

I love how the same location can look totally different every time I photograph it.

They were total troopers – even in the freezing cold they managed to stay happy, cuddling to keep warm :)

Chelsea is absolutely gorgeous… love her smile!

Thanks for venturing out in the cold to let me capture your love!

Ryan and Ashley are about the cutest people ever. Even though it was freezing out (-11, say wha), they were so lovely to photograph, and didn’t complain at all (okay, Ryan may have complained once or twice ;) . One thing we all agreed after the session was that it was really fun! We laughed a lot, played around a bit in the snow, and had a great time. :)

Ryan proposed to Ashley just a little over a month ago… in the funniest/cutest way. After a long night out, they came home and Ashley just crashed. Ryan asked her if she wanted anything, and in her half-awake state, she blurted out, ‘ice cream!’. Instead, he pulled out a ring… and the rest is history. However, Ashley says she still hasn’t gotten her ice cream – but I think the ring was a nicer surprise.

After a quick outfit change, we hit the boardwalk… Ryan and Ashley were such troopers, rockin’ the hoodies and flannel in the cold.

I loooove this next image

Lately I’ve really been trying to get out of my comfort zone a little bit with shooting. Once I know I’ve got ‘the shots’, I like to try something a little different, like these next few…

Thank you both so much for venturing into the cold to make some awesome images with me!

The day my friend Steve and I went for a walk in the cornfield is one I’ll never forget. Mainly because we were almost killed by a crazy farmer/serial killer. Oh, that day.

We had went to Clarenville for a photo shoot and booster juice. On our way back home, there was this gorgeous, amazing cornfield. The kind that makes photographers of all kinds drool. You just don’t get cornfields like that in Central. So we stopped, obviously. Took pictures. Frolicked in the rolling fields and made love to our cameras. Until… a truck started coming towards us from way in the fields. Just driving straight towards us at 5 km/h. We had no idea if the person in the truck was going to tell us to leave, or just pull out a hacksaw and start ripping us to shreds. Too many scary movies and a cornfield at sunset instantly put me in mind of every scary movie I’ve ever seen… so we hopped in the jeep and left, with the crazy-truck man barely inches behind.

In the end we escaped, the guy in the truck waved, and I made fun of Steve for being a scaredy-pants the whole way home.

But on to editing!

I’ve had some requests for how I edit photos – and I’m going to say straight up that I’m not a crazy amazing editor, I usually keep things pretty natural. Anyone reading this who already knows how to edit photos is probably doing a facepalm, and for that I apologize. This is meant to be an extremely basic tutorial for anyone who is literally JUST learning how to use photoshop.

As a no-brainer, you can’t make a bad picture good in photoshop – you have to start off with a good, well-exposed photo, and enhance it. But if you want to know my secrets… the tools that I use are:

1) adobe lightroom and photoshop cs5. I use lightroom for batch-editing, such as weddings, so if you’re not shooting weddings or editing 1500 photos at a time… don’t even worry about it. Photoshop CS5 is pretty expensive for the average consumer, but photoshop elements is a much cheaper program (runs for around $100 I think) with many of the same controls. However… today, January 24th adobe actually has a sale running for $50 off a student and teacher version of photoshop. So if you are either of those, today is a great day to snatch a copy of photoshop! :)

2) paint the moon actions. Annie Manning, the creator, is an editing genius. This is where I get my ‘secret sauce’. Her actions run for around $30-$40 for a set; which is super cheap for what you’re getting. Actions are essentially a bundle of commands that you do to a photo (adding light, soft colors, warmth, contrast, etc) that, when you click the button, allows you to do it all at once instead of taking a couple of hours to do each command separately.

Let’s roll!

I start with this photo that Steve took of me in the cornfield (before the crazy farmer/serial killer showed up). I’m using a photo of myself because it’s easier to talk about myself… and anyone else would probably get offended if I talked about their pimples and off-color spots.

I then open the photo up in photoshop – and because I shot in RAW, I was able to edit a lot of things right from the start that I wouldn’t have been able to do if I had shot in JPEG. Shooting RAW is a lot like it sounds… every bit of information is kept right in the file (sort of like how raw food keeps all it’s nutrients before it’s cooked), whereas JPEGs keep only what you have pre-chosen to keep. Shooting RAW is only helpful if you plan to be editing in lightroom or photoshop. You should be able to see a slight difference in this photo from the first – I pulled up the contrast a little bit, and added a little tiny bit of warmth.

As embarrassing/awkward as this is… I promised you the whole process. The first thing I do when I open a photo in photoshop is the basic edits. Kind of like when you put on makeup; you do the base before you move on. The first thing I do is get rid of the uglies – which means any pimples, blemishes, scars that I don’t want (I usually ask before removing them on other people, but I know I won’t mind), and little hairs. Before doing that though, I make a new layer – so that the original picture never actually gets touched. You can use the tool in the bottom, or an even easier way is to click and drag your base layer to that little ‘create a new layer’ tool. That will create a duplicate of your photo right on top – and keeps your original squeaky clean.

When I have my new layer, I use that little tool on the left called the ‘patch tool’ you just circle a bad spot, then drag it over a good spot to replace it. Easy-peesy. And makes you look better than you actually are. I don’t liquify or replace the skin or anything – remember you’re actually replacing the bad spots with your own skin, so it still looks natural, just clearer. (you’ll also notice that I took the second picture first – which is why there’s only one layer in the second picture. Forgive me).

All cleaned up – and as you can see, it looks much better. :)

After I’ve cleaned the skin, I remove any distractions that may be in the photo. In this particular photo, some corn stalks behind me make it look like I have antennas growing from my head.

I grab the clone stamp and essentially make a clone of the sky next to the ‘antennas’. I then brush it right over, going until it’s all covered. Don’t worry about making mistakes – as long as you’re doing it on a layer (and not the base photo), you can easily erase it.

Then I play my paint the moon action… for a little extra warmth and pop.

My final step is to add gradients to my photo. I love me some warmth, and adding a soft, warm gradient to the sky just makes it look even better. Steve (the one who was chased by a crazy farmer, and also took this picture…. scroll to the top… okay. Steve) taught me this trick, and I use it constantly now.

And there you have it!

On Saturday, we celebrated Jacob’s first time in the snow! It was such a fun moment to capture, he was so excited and had no idea what to think of all the fluffy white stuff… it’s crazy how things that naturally get taken for granted {and usually complained about}, a baby sees as amazing.

We started our session at their home – so Jacob could show me how awesome he is at basketball, obvs.

that’s cool, let’s go ahead and eat Elmo

when he finally stayed still long enough to bundle up, we headed out – he got to ride around in a sled while the rest of us walked around, the lucky duck.

Let’s see what snow tastes like…

apparently, it wasn’t as impressive to eat as it is to look at.

I love this last shot…

This was my fourth session with the Curlews, and our last session in their first year plan… I’m already sad that I won’t be seeing them as much anymore! It’s been an awesome year with you guys, and I absolutely LOVED watching Jacob go from a little bump to an awesome, adorable kiddo with a hilarious personality. Thanks so much for trusting me with all of your important moments!

Hey everyone! This is the first in a series of lessons I’ll be teaching on how to be a better photographer. Whether you got a brand new Nikon for Christmas (if you got a Canon, I won’t hold it against you) or you’ve been playing around with photography for years and just want some new tricks, hopefully you’ll learn something from this. :) I’ll say first off that by no means am I the best out there, or even close… but if we all waited until we were perfect before we started sharing, then nobody would ever learn anything. So please, please share your feedback with me and let me know what you think and how I can improve on these, and also – share with your friends, a little camera love never hurts!

The first lesson I want to teach is on the question I get asked the most… how I get such natural expressions from kiddos in my photos. Here’s five tips on how to be a better child photographer!

First rule: Tell your subject NOT to smile.

Personally, I find what works best is just to flat out say ‘okay now I want you to try as hard as you possibly can to NOT laugh at me while I make funny faces’. Nearly every kid I know loves doing the opposite of what you want them to do, so this just forces them to burst out in big full-belly laughs. You can also ask them to make funny faces at you and capture the moments in between, or if your kid is ticklish and enjoys being tickled, go for that. Keep the camera going to get a number of different expressions in just a few seconds. And don’t forget… nobody smiles ALL the time. Some of my all-time favorite photos are the grumpy, thoughtful looks.

Second rule: Make it fun!

This means no threats and no bribes! Threats and bribes both play on the same thing – living in the future instead of enjoying right now. Play some games, have fun, and aim to capture their true personality. If you have more than one child, encourage them to interact with one another (fun fact: tell the younger sibling to whisper to the older sibling that you just fluffled. Biggest laughs come from embarrassment, I tell ya). Let photo time be a natural part of a game such as Simon Says or hide-and-seek, and you’ll definitely make it a more enjoyable experience.

Third Rule: Compliment, compliment, compliment!

Self-explanatory, and works better with girls than guys. Regardless of how old they are, people love being told they look good, or are doing a great job at something, no matter how small it is. Even just saying that they are such a good model works wonders for coaxing more shy kids out of their shell.

Fourth rule: Get up close and personal.

Stand within conversation distance of your subject and well, actually have a conversation. This removes a lot of distracting background elements, and also helps both the photographer and subject feel more at ease because you can interact while taking the photos. Young kids especially love questions – so by standing really close, this is a great chance to ask them some questions about their day, and get some really great natural expressions as they converse with you.

Fifth rule: Keep it short and sweet.

Kids are funny little humans. Short attention spans mean that anything you do has to be done fast. Take a few minutes to pull out the camera to capture those giggles… and then put it away and actually play with them. If they tell you that they want you to stop, respect that. They’ll appreciate the time spent together, and won’t come to resent your camera.

So that’s it for the first lesson! Please pass on the learning, and share this with your friends via facebook and twitter!

Until next time,

-Alex

Anyone who has spent a large amount of time around me (or follows me on pinterest) knows that I love my puns. The worse the joke, the more I laugh. So here’s a compilation of a few that made me laugh really hard… if you follow me on pinterest you’ve probably already seen these, and if you live anywhere near me you probably know now why you could hear me snorting all the way from your house.

This next one is definitely my favorite….

You may or may not have noticed that I’ve been away for the past week… it’s been lovely to have a nice year-end/year-beginning break, to rejuvenate and spend some time with the fella. You also may or may not know that the fella lives in Alberta, so a couple of times a year one of us ventures to the other side of the country for a couple of weeks of bliss. Our story is an odd, hard-knock romance one… over two years ago (has it really been two years?!) we both went on a school trip to Ottawa. I had my eye on the strapping young man who didn’t know I existed… and finally I tracked him down and challenged him to a game of hangman. We exchanged addresses and I gave him a kiss on the cheek, and a few months later, a hand-written note showed up (d’awe). We wrote back and forth for a while, then started supplementing our letters with Skype dates and lots of long-distance calls. This is my second trip in six months… and although the distance is killer, I wouldn’t trade our relationship for the world.

Whadda cutie, eh. ;)

After he started complaining about being cold… we set the tripod and I jumped in.

Some people say that I take too many kissing pictures. I don’t think that’s possible – you can never have too many photos of two people in love, right? And on a side note… the light that day was SO creamy and wonderful.

Sky is also a lovely photographer (you can check him out here) and I contracted him to take some new head shots for me. I think he did a swell job. :)

I’m here for another few days, and still running my business from afar… so if you want to book a wedding or portrait session, keep em coming!

Until next time,

This past weekend I went to Corner Brook for Colleen and Allan’s gorgeous winter wedding. It was such a nice and relaxed day, the perfect way to end the season! Allan and Colleen are such sweethearts, I feel like I’ve known them forever, and I’m so glad to have gotten to know them both and become friends. Their love is so sweet and real, and it was an honour to be a part of their wedding day.

I started the day over with the boys – who left me waiting while they went to Jungle Jims for breakfast, haha

The snow was lightly falling all day, it was so beautiful.

I left the boys, and went to hang out with the girls… just as Colleen’s flowers showed up. I absolutely LOVE the gorgeous red roses – and the red shoes!

Colleen is an absolutely stunning bride – and I love her sense of vintage style.

The couple was married at the First Pentecostal Church (ie, East side), and was decorated with – you guessed it – real live trees. It was so different, but awesome for a winter wedding and definitely added that Christmas-y touch!

After the ceremony we went to Bowater Park for some photos – again, Colleen, share the beauty….

Her lovely ladies! Gotta shout out here, Colleen’s bridal party was so sweet, everyone helped out to make the day super special, and Penney (the one on the left) even made me hot chocolate ;) that gives her extra cool points in my book.

And of course the guys goofed off

When we finished with group photos, we took a few minutes to get some sweet shots of Allan and Colleen… props to them for sticking it out in the cold! You’d never know that our fingers and toes were on the verge of falling off.

Thank you both so much for including me in your special day. I had a great time and I can’t wait to see you again soon!
