Gabrielle is {sort of} like a little mini me. She follows me around… mimics my silly faces… wakes me up with light sabers… lets me teach her how to dance. She is the most stubborn little person I have ever met, and it’s so fun and refreshing to be around her. I still can’t really believe she’s old enough to be graduating preschool – I can remember when she was just a little mite – yet here she is, about to go to kindergarten. I was pleased as punch to follow her around all day, because everything is so exciting to a four year old – especially new earrings and a pretty dress.

You may remember big brother Liam from our shoot last Fall – and now he has a little brother! Reid is the cutest little thing, and even though he was asleep when I showed up, he was wide awake for our whole session! For a little guy he is so alert and such a pleasant, sweet baby.

I love these little details of a newborn baby – the perfect hair, lips and toes are too cute.

Thank you all so much for once again allowing me to capture your family’s memories.

haha… NO idea what happened here, but I’m assuming Meg started blowing away!

Big thanks to Josh and Meg (and Rozzy, who stayed behind the camera and threw coats around) for hanging out in the cold with me.

That’s a scary thing… here’s this little guy who used to pee in the houseplants when he was a youngster (sorry for sharing that, Jonah) now having mature conversations with me, helping me with MY problems, and overall being a really cool dude. It’s nuts how fast it’s all happening… he’s nearly a teenager now. Soon enough he’ll be driving a car and taking girls on dates and asking me big questions that I won’t want to answer. But for today, I’m enjoying every last moment of him being a silly twelve year old. He makes me laugh more than anyone else in this world, and he’s still the only person that I can beat up and not feel bad about it. Here’s some photos of his recent transition into pre-teenager-hood.

I love his laugh :) It makes my day.

Love you, bro.

Hey everyone! Today I have my friend Rich guest blogging for me all about first looks for brides and grooms, along with an adorable video of one of his own couples – how cool is he, right? Rich is a professional photographer and videographer, and shoots alongside his lovely fiance Christine in sunny California. Before he starts though, I have a funny story about him – a couple of days ago we were chatting, and I was telling him about one of my epic skidoo runs. Totally serious, he asked ‘what is skidoo’? Haha!I hope you enjoy his post – please let me know in the comments what you think!

Rich: For many many years, it has been understood that if a groom sees his bride in her dress before she walks down the aisle, the marriage will be doomed. This tradition actually comes from a time of arranged marriages, where marriages were actually business deals between families and land owners. This usually meant prosperity and wealth for the families involved, so the groom was never allowed to see his bride before the wedding, because if he thought she was “ugly”, he would run away, and the deal would be off. No land. No wealth. No prosperity.

Fast forward a few hundred years, and here we are still holding to that tradition. However, there are a few brave souls that dare challenge it with what we call, “The First Look.” The first look is actually a pre-designated time where the bride and groom see each other BEFORE the ceremony! Here are Christine and I’s top 5 reasons why we absolutely LOVE the first look:

1) Seeing each other for the first time is a very special moment. Why not make it even more personal, and keep that moment between the two of you as opposed to hundreds of guests?

2) Since the first look is just for the two of you, you’ll be able to freely act however you want. Cry, laugh, dance. It’s all gravy. We photographers love that stuff. And you will too once you see the photos. Emotion is key. There are no rules.

3) Seeing each other before the ceremony frees you and your photographer up to get formals out of the way early so that you guys will be able to just relax and unwind a little bit after the ceremony. After all, you guys have some heavy partying to do. Better rest up.

4) Relating to no. 2, many of us have a deep fear of speaking in public so we opt out of reciting our own vows at the ceremony. With the first look, you’ll be able to tell your lovey exactly how you feel about them in whatever words you choose.

Whether you choose a first look or not, your wedding is all about emotion you two share. The first look is a very special opportunity for you guys to express emotions with each other.

And so I leave you with the perfect example of a first look. Michelle and Kenny are one of the sweetest couples out there. They just ooze with love for each other. This was the first time Michelle had ever seen Kenny cry.

Some people are born lucky, some are born rich, but most of us have to struggle for a living. One of the lucky ones is the outport ‘millionaire’ of Newfoundland. This millionaire has no money to speak of; he is endowed with the special gift of being able to get along without it. He lives and dies in the village where he was born, and from the start is as firmly rooted as if his mother has actually found him under a stump. (Ron Pollett, The Outport Millionaire)

For the past couple of weeks, I had family visiting from the mainland – add in my brother and cousin and there were seven boys between the ages of eleven and seventeen beatin around everyday. Let me tell ya, it was a time.

One morning me and a couple of the young men went out for a walk. The day was mild, the wind wasn’t quite as bitter as it usually is this time of year, and while the sun wasn’t shining it was a perfectly typical ‘newfie’ day. We walked across the rocks, down past the ice, to the place that my ancestors called home. You can still see the faint outlines of their lives… a rusty relic, some driftwood piled along the shore, concrete remains of a cellar that once stood strong. Telling them the stories that I grew up with, of the men that worked hard and of the outport village that’s grown into a thriving community… I couldn’t help thinking of how blessed I am to have grown up around the bay. Knowing that the ocean is right outside my door and that my home will always be the most beautiful place I can think of, that’s a sort of blessed life that not everyone is born into. My dad constantly calls himself the outport millionaire – the man who with a boat, a great family, and a little house on the rocks, has everything he needs – and I can’t agree with him more. My greatest wish is that one day I can look back on my own life and be able to call myself that as well.

Photographing babies – newborns in particular – can be a very tricky (and touchy) subject. Because tiny babies are so fragile, it’s difficult to give instructions on posing. However, here are three pretty basic rules on photographing these cute little bundles of joy. If you have any other tips, please add them in the comments!

Tip #1 – Always look down.

A big mistake I see a lot of people make when they photograph babies is essentially looking up their noses. It’s never nice to photograph someone from down below, and babies are no different (unless you’re specifically going for that “let’s see your boogers” kind of thing). It’s a little harder to notice when you’re photographing babies though, as they’re usually lying flat and you’re shooting from above them. Try to keep your camera directed down their body, and keep in mind to always look down at their noses, instead of up.

Tip #2 – No flash!

While flash is not proven to be harmful to babies’ eyes, most camera manufacturers still recommend against getting too close with the flash, about one meter should be the absolute closest. Besides the possible health risk, direct flash is usually unflattering, and the bright, sudden light can also make babies cry. If using an off camera flash, be sure to turn it to a low setting and bounce it off a wall or ceiling, or better yet – position the little one in front of a window for the most flattering portraits of your new addition.

this photo was captured by having mom and baby stand in front of the kitchen window - no flash required.

Tip #3 – Shoot what you want to remember.

Baby toes, little lips, the wisps of fine hair poking over the ears… all things you’re going to want to remember years down the road. I’m a real sucker for baby feet, and always manage a few laughs from moms when I hold onto a kiddo’s legs and zoom in on their kickers. Changing up the angle and photographing the details of your little bean creates some great images that are a little different, but equally treasured. Instead of always going straight for the ‘look at me and smile’ shot, try for some things that you’re really going to want in a couple of years – in-the-moment shots of mom nursing the baby, or of the little guy in his birthday suit, fast asleep on his belly (remember to keep the privates covered, of course!)

Tip #4 – Keep it simple.

If you want to photograph a newborn but you have never taken any professional classes in posing, don’t try anything crazy. Much of what professional newborn photographers do is done in Photoshop after the fact. You might be surprised (or maybe not) to see that there are a lot of people out there hanging babies from baskets or nets in trees, or trying to position their tiny bodies in ways that babies really aren’t strong enough to do (such as hold up their faces with their hands).  This makes me so sad to see… often because the photographers really don’t know any different; they’ve seen some of their favorite muses doing it, so they assume it must be safe as well. But anything that puts the baby in danger isn’t worth the photo. Simply positioning the child on a couch or ottoman can make for some really nice portraits – without any dangerous techniques.

this particular shot was captured by turning the couch towards the window, and draping a blanket over it.

I hope these were helpful, and if you have any tips to add, or suggestions for future lessons, please share with me in the comments – I love to hear from you!

I had so many favorite photos from this shoot, that it’s taking two posts to do them all!

I’ve been photographing this family since their oldest, Brady was just a little guy… and now their little guy Jaxson is getting big! I can never get over how awesome it is to watch children grow up in front of my eyes, it’s such a miracle.

I don’t normally shoot indoors; and I always ‘warn’ people beforehand that if we’re shooting indoors, it’s going to look different from my usual shoots! I essentially tear apart the room with the most windows, stick the kids on the floor and let them go nuts. These guys totally rocked it, and I think we got some gorgeous shots of Brady and Jaxson. I can’t even handle how much of a little model Jaxson is, he was hamming it up for the camera.

I can’t wait to show you the rest, post two will be up on Wednesday.
